Before describing the application of GS1 standards in E-commerce, we will outline its main objectives. One of the most important goals of E-commerce is the facility and speed of business matters in electronic form. One of the important factors in E-commerce is the sharing of reliable product data because customer purchase decision making is based on this information. It is natural that if there is no single global standard for information exchange, the members of a product supply chain cannot seamlessly communicate with each other. GS1 has provided standards for electronic data interchange (EDI). As it is clear termed, these standards are used to manage financial and business messages as well as electronic data exchanges.

Other applications of GS1 standards in E-commerce include the creation of the largest online products database called GS1 Cloud. GS1 Cloud is a database which includes all items with a global trade item number (GTIN) that is made available since early 2018. The purpose of creating such wide-reaching database is to launch the largest and most reliable source of product information in the world and has provided a wide range of services in the field of B2C and B2B E-commerce for businesses and customers.

Digital Link is one of the other GS1 applications in E-Commerce. GS1 standards are recognized as the primary reference for product identification. GS1 barcodes are accounted as the major reference for product information and pricing in all traditional stores, but this is not enough in the 21st century. Presently, using a digital link would enable representation of GS1 identification keys within web addresses to link to online information and services. This digital link is referred to as GS1 Web URI. As a result of this, it will be possible to represent and place GS1 identification keys within Web addresses (Web URIs) as well as within the barcodes containing the digital link, such that both the product identification for supply chain and a link to online material can be performed by just a single identification.
